... or what was it actually like in those days?
The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL gave the miracle of the economic boom in Germany of the fifties a recognizable and desirable face. Together with its formally related brother – the super sports car 300 SL – the 190 SL was realized at the suggestion of New York Mercedes-Benz importer Max Hoffmann. From 1955 to 1962, it was produced about 26,000 times. And both of them, with their high quality and perfect proportions, were spreading the message of a resurgent German automotive industry all over the world. The use of the denotation “SL” for the 190-series was intended to enhance the series and promote sales. In the company brochures, however, the more appropriate term “touring sports” car was used.
... or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
It is a very elaborately restored automobile. During the restoration special emphasis was placed on the original specifications (color, interior equipment, hood) of the manufacturer. The result is a vehicle, which resembles a new car character. Due to the special restoration services, this vehicle stands out clearly from the normal old-timer market as well as from other classic cars with condition mark 1. The work carried out is extensively documented and the sale is covered by a one-year full warranty. We have already requested the MB data card and an individual value certificate.
... or what is it like to drive?
The vehicle radiates even today what made it so special in the 50’s. Its all-round successful body shapes and its solidity are still effective on observers, drivers and passengers. Reliable, functional, suitable for everyday use, easy to maintain, comfortable, elegant, exciting and stable in value – these are the attributes that spontaneously go through your head when you look at a 190 SL. It is certainly a valuable collector's item in this excellent condition. But you can take it without further restrictions for short or longer trips – the proverbial Mercedes quality, the comfortable design, the high practicality and the good handling make this possible. In its first-class condition, it certainly has potential for value enhancement.
