... or what was it actually like in those days?
As of 1952, the racing success of the racing gullwing model W194 reinforced the pressure on the management to offer again high-quality supercars. Especially the American market was waiting for such a vehicle. Consequently, in 1954, the 300 SL (W 198) was presented in New York. The interest exceeded all expectations and in 1957, the roadster version W 198 II appeared on the market. There was an even greater demand for this model at that time since it was much more comfortable in everyday use. Back then, the Roadster cost DM 32,500. Thus, these vehicles were about DM 3,500 more expensive than a gullwing and cost about four times as much as a Mercedes 170 V!
... or how did it fare over the years?
The vehicle has been in Germany for over 25 years. Apart from the paint, which was renewed a few years ago, the vehicle is completely in its original state. The original engine of the first delivery is still installed.
The Condition ...
... or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
Technology and optics present themselves after the high-quality restoration (1995-2000) in very good condition. Original MB replacement engine “aluminum engine”. Everything works perfectly. German papers with H-mark.
The Performance ...
... or what is it like to drive?
What was written nearly 60 years ago is still valid today: The 300 SL is a car with a unique appearance, coupled with an almost incredible performance. Its design and manufacturing quality are absolutely first class. The entire concept represents an uncompromising realization of all new ideas (from Autosport). In summary, Auto Motor und Sport emphasized that among the sports cars of our time, the Mercedes 300 SL is the most sophisticated and at the same time most fascinating vehicle – a dream car!
