...or what was it actually like in those days?
The mid-fifties saw the start of Germany’s economic miracle. People could afford to purchase again, economic growth ensued and the automobile industry began to offer high value cars to the German market. In parallel, requests for Mercedes sports cars came from the important U.S. market which further increased demand. As a result, Mercedes-Benz decided to develop new sports car models. It was the birth of the SL series, introduced in 1954 in New York. The abbreviation SL stands for Sport Light and was the mark of the 300 series. The use of SL for the 190 series was aimed at adding value to the series. In brochures, however, the more appropriate term “touring sports car” was used. In total, 25,881 examples were produced.
...or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
The vehicle is expertly restored to a high level. The 190 is as visually and technically perfect as it was when delivered in 1959. A very authentic vehicle.
...or what is it like to drive?
With its colour combination of black exterior with beige (Cognac?) leather interior, it is a feast for the eyes and a classic collectible. However, you can also spontaneously fall in its caressing leather seats and drive off in a flash, whether to the local bakery or down to Sicily! The rock-solid engineering and suitability for everyday use make this possible – it is a car which still captivates today. And visually so much to see in the 190 - from any side and any angle you look at it, whilst stationary or in motion, if you like profiles, you cannot resist turning your head. This goes not only for the open top but also with the roof closed.
