...or what was it actually like in those days?
In the 60s, awareness grew for better safety measures on the road. Mercedes was one of the pioneers of this cause and stepped up its research and development to improve the passive safety of vehicles. The results were presented at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show when pioneering safety features were incorporated in their SL series: rigid passenger compartment, defined crumple zones front and rear, telescopic steering column with impact absorber, an interior with no sharp edges and corners, radial tires and seat belts as optional accessories. Incidentally, the nickname Pagoda emerged due to the shape of the concavely-arched hardtop, a concept aimed at improving the available interior space.
...or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
The entire vehicle has been subject to a total restoration at the highest level. All clearances and spaces are impeccable. All the technology is in a good condition and the traditional look, metallic grey exterior and beige leather interior, is just brilliant. A photographic documentation as well as the data card from Mercedes-Benz is available. Matching numbers car with engine from first delivery.
...or what is it like to drive?
Even with the 2.3 litre engine it is a dynamic representation of the Pagoda-series, reaching its top speed with ease. The solid, rigid construction, the proven long-life technology, the good performance and road holding, the secure supply of spare parts and its workshop friendliness can provide many decades of enjoyment for a future owner. In its current condition, increasing values are inevitable.
