...or what was it actually like in those days?
A luxury car as an outstanding achievement of the German automotive industry in dark times – when arms production had priority. Vehicle purchases could be subsidised if the vehicles were made available in the event of mobilisation. In line with the many vehicle and body variants of Mercedes, the 320 replaced the 290 from 1937. The chassis of the 290 was further used on longer and wider bodies. The 320 was designed as a touring car which could handle longer distances with ease. In 1938 the engine was enlarged to 3.4 litres to compensate for the deteriorating quality of petrol. In addition, a transmission with overdrive was fitted, so that on the existing motorway sections the car could be driven long distances at high speed. Although not designed for high performance, the 320 excels through its good road holding and comfortable low-effort handling. At the time, it cost an impressive 13,500 Reichsmarks and was one of 5,133 examples produced at the Mannheim plant.
...or how it has fared over the years?
Its precise history is not known. During the recent restoration, the original bodywork still showed traces of bullet holes. The body was constructed in 1939 in Mannheim, the engine produced in Sindelfingen in 1940.
...or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
The vehicle is totally newly restored, both technically and visually, with the highest level of craftsmanship. Since restoration it has hardly been driven. It is in pristine condition, as it was when first delivered. Everything works perfectly. The work has been thoroughly documented through photos. A comprehensive surveyor’s report is available.
...or what is it like to drive?
The vehicle is particularly suitable for prominent trips and shows. With its harmonious colour scheme of blue exterior combined with the tasteful grey leather interior, the elegant lines of the body type A attracts positively admiring glances from all around – when the roof is closed, and especially in the open position. The excellent technical condition allows for trouble-free driving at any time. Provided appropriate care and maintenance are ongoing, there is still a long running life ahead, and increasing values are anticipated.
