History
The 1000 Miglia was an open-road, motorsport endurance race established in 1926 by Giovanni Canestrini, Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi and Renzo Castagneto. They had the idea of this amazing speed race on open public roads, taking place over a route of 1,600 kilometers (equal to 1000 miles) from Brescia to Rome and back. It’s considered the vintage car race par excellence. The initial race began on 26th March 1927; 21 hours, 4 minutes, and 48 seconds later it was won by Ferdinando Minoja and Giuseppe Morandi in a Brescia-built OM 665 Superba.
From 1927 to 1957, 24 editions of the 1000 Miglia were held with the participations of prestigious brands like Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes and with legendary drivers including Juan Manuel Fangio, Tazio Nuvolari, Alberto Ascari and Stirling Moss behind the wheel. In 1957, after two fatal crashes claimed the lives of more than ten drivers and spectators, event organisers eased off the gas. Between 1958 and 1961, the race became a more sedate affair; a grand tour around the northern half of Italy driven at legal speeds. And, after several years, even this idea was parked.
In 1977 the 1000 Miglia experienced a new start and has transformed into the most important regularity race in the world for historic cars. Over the years, the race has evolved by opening up to other categories and opening up to innovation. Today the brand is known all over the world with the creation of side events, such as the Experiences, which bring with them all its 1000 Miglia values: Uniqueness, Experience, Passion, Excellence, Tradition, and Innovation.
